Samantha Mumba is an Irish singer, model and actress who began her career at age 15 after participating at the RTE TV talent show “Let Me Entertain You.” The show’s producer Svengali Louis Walsh was impressed by her talent and signed Mumba with a recording deal under Polydor Records. Samantha Mumba then performed in various countries such as Sweden, Denmark and the UK to promote her debut album “Gotta Tell You”. She wrote most of the songs in the album and because of her newfound work, she decided to drop out of school and focus on her music career.
Her first single “Gotta Tell You” peaked at #1 at the Irish charts and #2 in the British charts. Samantha Mumba also became successful in the United States with her single reaching the #4 at the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Her debut album reached platinum status after six months and released five more hit singles in the UK and US music scenes. In 2001, Samantha Mumba released a Christmas EP entitled “Samantha Sings Christmas”, which also became a bonus disc on the special release of Gotta Tell You.
In 2002, Samantha Mumba released another single, “I’m Right Here,” featuring Damien Marley, son of Bob Marley. The single was less successful, but the video became a favorite in the US and UK. Despite rumors that she was going to release a second album and even after Samantha Mumba denied the issue on the “Late Late Show,” an unreleased second album entitled “Woman” did exist.
In 2006, Samantha Mumba released her compilation album, “The Collection”, which featured songs from “Gotta Tell You,” B-Sides, and other new tracks. In 2008, Samantha Mumba appeared in the show “Loose Women” and joined the reality TV show “Dancing On Ice.” In October 2008, Samantha posted the new tracks “Candyland,” “Turn the Beat Up,” and “Bad Boy” on her YouTube and MySpace profiles.
Aside from being a singer, Samantha Mumba is also a model. She became the image model of designer Louise Kennedy’s spring/summer collection. Samantha was also an endorser for the “Dior Watch Collection” in Ireland. She also modeled for “Reebok” and “Ultimo Per Amore”.
When her career as a singer slowed down in 2002, Samantha Mumba tried her luck as an actress and starred in the movie “The Time Machine”. She followed this with a role in the film “Spin the Bottle” in 2003, “Boy Eats Girl” in 2005, “Nailed”, and “3 Crosses.”
